Trainer/Assessor Industry Currency Matrix

Purpose:
This matrix ensures that KIC trainers and assessors maintain current industry skills, Vocational Education and Training (VET) expertise, and training competence as required by the ASQA Standards for RTOs 2015 (Clauses 1.13–1.16). It is a key tool for demonstrating compliance, ensuring training quality, and providing verifiable evidence of professional development linked to the delivered Units of Competency (UOCs).

The Importance of This Matrix

  • Regulatory Compliance:
Confirms that staff continuously update their industry and vocational skills per ASQA requirements.
  • Quality Assurance:
Ensures training reflects current industry practices, preparing students with relevant, job-ready skills.
  • Transparency:
Provides clear, auditable evidence connecting each professional activity to its respective UOC, enhancing accountability.

How to Complete the Matrix

  • Date
Record the start and end dates of the activity in DD/MM/YYYY format.
    • For single-day events, use the same date for both fields, or use just the start date
    • If exact dates are unknown, use the closest approximations.
  • CRICOS Course Code
Select the CRICOS Course Code that corresponds to the course you are accredited to deliver at KIC. This code identifies the specific course and its associated units of competency (UOCs) that you hold qualifications to teach. For example, the code “SIT60322” relates to a specific course offered at KIC, linking directly to the units you are accredited to deliver under that course.
  • UOC Delivered
List the specific Unit of Competency delivered at KIC (e.g., SITXCCS014).
  • Trainer’s Competency
Specify the UOC or qualification you hold that relates to the activity (e.g., SITXINV007).
  • Type of Activity (select one per entry)
    • Industry Skills:
Involves active participation in real-world industry tasks (e.g., working in a restaurant kitchen, managing hotel stock, or handling customer complaints).
Note: “Delivered training” alone does not qualify unless paired with hands-on industry tasks.
    • VET Knowledge and Skills:
Focuses on improving teaching and assessment methods (e.g., workshops on e-learning, compliance updates, or assessment design conferences).
    • Trainer/Assessor Competence:
Supports meeting professional teaching standards (e.g., TAE upgrades, validation/moderation sessions).
  • Organisation/Venue (Address & Contact)
Provide the name, address, and contact details (e.g., phone, email) of the workplace, event, or institution (e.g., Hyde Park Hotel, TAFE WA).
  • Skills Gained
Summarize the skills learned or demonstrated (e.g., “Implemented FIFO stock rotation”).
  • Hours
Record the approximate time spent on the activity.
    • Use “N/A” for ongoing roles (e.g., part-time work).
  • Evidence (Attach File)
Indicate if supporting documentation (e.g., certificates, pay slips, photos) is attached.
    • If unavailable, explain why (e.g., “Evidence not available due to workplace policy”).

Key Reminders

  • Industry Skills require active workplace engagement (e.g., working shifts, solving real industry problems).
  • VET Knowledge and Skills focus on teaching/assessment methods, not direct industry practice.
  • Avoid listing “delivered training” under Industry Skills unless it includes hands-on industry tasks.
  • For missing evidence, note the reason and follow up as needed (e.g., request supervisor sign-off).
